Task
Your contribution to the Salem High Museum's Women of Worth exhibit will consist of two parts. Part one is a research essay on your subject, formatted in MLA style. Part two is a digital artifact (a multimedia project) that uses technology to bring your subject to life and to showcase her accomplishments for museum visitors. Please review the details below on how to structure both parts of your project.
Part One: Research Essay Requirements
Part Two: Digital Artifact
The rubric for evaluating both parts of your final project is on the Evaluation page.
Part One: Research Essay Requirements
- MLA format, 4-5 pages plus Works Cited page.
- Include a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
- Create an outline before you write.
- Participate in a peer-review of rough drafts (we will devote time in class to this activity).
- Include information about your subject's childhood, young adult life, field of study, notable contributions, and life up to the present moment (or her death).
- Be sure to address the following questions about your subject:
- What inspired her to make a contribution to her field?
- Who were influential individuals within her life?
- What experiences shaped her voluntary or involuntary desire to become an agent of change within her field?
- What are her notable contributions to her field of study?
- What positive personal attributes does she display and how?
- How did her accomplishments impact society?
- (If a historical figure) How have her historical contributions impacted contemporary people, places, etc.?
- What personal reflections and observations pique your interest and are noteworthy of extended discussion?
Part Two: Digital Artifact
- Your artifact is NOT a repeat of your essay!
- Pretend you ARE your subject or a narrator close to your subject.
- You WILL present your work to the class as practice for when the museum exhibit goes live.
- Showcase your subject's life and accomplishments using one of the following options:
- Create a mock Facebook profile of your subject. Include at least 15 posts from your subject about notable events, and provide 2-3 comments from others related to her life/work for each post.
- Prezi / Powerpoint: Create a slideshow of at least 15 slides highlighting the life/work of your subject (either from her perspective or that of one close to her). Include at least ten images or videos in your slideshow (these items should NOT take up an entire slide).
- Screencast: Create a screencast of at least five minutes highlighting the life/work of your subject (either from her perspective or that of one close to her). Incorporate at least ten images, videos, or other multimedia into your screencast.
- Podcast: Create a podcast of at least five minutes in which your subject is speaking of her life/work or other notable accomplishments. Another option is to pretend you are a radio host interviewing your subject about her life.
- SchoolTube Video: Create a video of at least five minutes in which you play the role of your subject discussing highlights of her life. Be sure to dress appropriately for her time and culture, and highlight her notable accomplishments. Use SchoolTube instead of YouTube to upload your video.
- Other: If you have a different idea for creating a digital artifact, please present it to the museum director for approval.
