Introduction
Welcome to the Salem High Museum! We are staff members of the museum, and we have been asked to put together an exhibit for Women's History Month. The exhibit will be publicized in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Creative Loafing, and other local arts/entertainment publications. Therefore, we will need to put in a team effort not only to build the exhibit, but also to develop educational and informational resources for it. Please review the job descriptions below and choose one for which you would like to apply. We will then divide into groups, each of which has a specific task in putting together the exhibit.
Job Descriptions
Assistant Director
The Assistant Director helps the Director to run the entire museum and also serves as the contact representative with the public. He or she ensures the museum functions effectively and helps oversee the staff. The assistant director also aids each department as needed.
Essential skills: organizes, works well with others, demonstrates a managerial mindset, remains flexible, maintains accountability, speaks well publicly, problem-solves, and multi-tasks effectively.
Curator
The Curator functions as the expert responsible for one collection type, cares for the display information and resources, co-assembles the museum catalog, and collaborates with the Registrar and Graphic Designers.
Essential skills: writes well, conducts research, cites research with textual evidence, and reads a variety of information.
Registrar
The Registrar is responsible for the museum resources, ensures safety of the resources on display, and collaborates with the Curators and Graphic Designers for catalog creation and production.
Essential skills: organizes, maintains records, and pays attention to details.
Museum Educator
The Museum Educator plans the tours for diverse visitors, collaborates with Curators to create exhibits, demonstrates creativity, shares innovative ideas, and works well with others.
Essential skills: communicates well, plans activities creatively, and has strong interpersonal skills.
Docent
The Docent greets and welcomes visitors to the museum, conducts tours, and educates visitors during the museum tour.
Essential skills: speaks well publicly, researches well, and collaborates well with others.
Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer creates posters and brochures regarding the museum using technology and paper, creates advertisements with the Public Relations Officers, designs a website with the Public Relations Officer, and co-creates the museum catalog.
Essential skills: Draws well, demonstrates creativity, writes effectively, and designs with innovative ideas.
Exhibit Designer
The Exhibit Designer plans the layout and display of the exhibits using the space, decides on the arrangement of the exhibits and colors, and assists Preparators with hanging and installing the artwork.
Essential Skills: demonstrates problem-solving skills, works well with math, and creatively uses color and space.
Preparator
The Preparator collaborates with the Exhibit Designers to install museum objects, arranges displays, constructs displays, and arranges items.
Essential Skills: Works well with math, enjoys building objects, utilizes space well, and pays attention to details.
Public Relations Officer
The Public Relations Officer writes press releases, announcements, and website information communicating the museum’s events. He or she also works on designing posters, brochures, advertisements, and the website with the Graphic Designer.
Essential skills: Demonstrates proper use of diction, uses a plethora of vocabulary terms, writes creatively, and publicly speaks effectively.
Museum Protection Staff (Security Officers)
The Museum Protection Staff is responsible for the safety of museum items and visual displays, responds to visitors’ questions, ensures visitors follow the museum rules, and maintains stations throughout visitation hours.
Essential skills: Works well with others, speaks well publicly, follows directions, and ensures accountability.
